In the end I had to tell Mum why it was I wanted my pocket money in advance. She said that a vague âhorsey thingâ wasnât good enough.
âBe more specific!â
I said, âWhy? Why do I have to?â I could hear my voice, all whiny and protesting.
Mum said, âI want to be sure youâre not frittering it away on something stupid.â
I felt like shouting, âItâs my money! I can fritter it if I want!â But I knew it would only make her angry and tell me not to take that tone of voice.
âWell?â said Mum.
I heaved a sigh and mumbled, âItâs for Rosie.â
âNot again!â cried Mum. âI thought that was all settled?â
I said, âWell, itâs not! Theyâre not looking after her properly. Mum, theyâre killing her! They just donât care! And sheâs all tied up in a horrid little box where she canât even turn round. Itâs like a prison cell!â
âMaybe horses donât mind being tied up,â said Mum.
âThey do! They hate it! Itâs not right! They ought to be free to run about. You shouldnât ever keep a horse tied up so it canât move! Itâs wicked! Itâsââ
âAll right, all right!â Mum threw up her hands. âI give in! You donât have to lecture me. Just tell me what youâre planning to do with this money youâre asking for.â
I brightened. âWeâre going to buy her back!â
âWith two weeksâ pocket money?â
âWell ⦠no. Weâll need a bit more than that.â
âA good bit more, I should think!â
âWeâre going to discuss it this morning.â
âAfter youâve done your homework.â
âOh, well, yes! Of course,â I said, doing my best to sound all keen and eager. âOf course weâll do our homework first.â
âHm!â said Mum.
âI donât suppose you have any ideas how to make money?â I said.
Mum gave what I think is called a mirthless laugh.
âPlease,â I begged. âThis is serious!â
Mum said, âOh, Hannah, making money is always serious. I spend my entire life struggling to make money! Iâm sorry, sweetheart, I really donât know what to suggest.â
Glumly I reported this to Katy. She said, âHey, guess what? I just had an idea!â
I looked at her hopefully.
âMaybe we could do that crowdfunding thing ⦠you know? When you go on the internet and ask people to send you money? You can raise thousands that way!â
I hesitated.
Katy said, âWell?â
I said, âMm ⦠I sâpose.â I didnât mean to throw cold water on her suggestion but I felt instinctively doubtful. It just sounded too easy!
Katy was obviously a bit annoyed. She said, âWhat dâyou mean, you suppose? Itâs what people do! They do it all the time! Look.â She typed something into Google. âSee? GoFundMe ⦠all you have to do â¦â
All you had to do was set up an account. We tried! We typed in the name of Mumâs bank, and the name of Katyâs mumâs bank, we even put in details of Katyâs bond thing that she wasnât allowed to touch, but none of it was any good. I wailed that Iâd known it was too easy!
âThatâs no reason to give in.
